πΈπ΄πΎπͺ Oil Tanker MT Eureka Hijacked in Gulf of Aden, Headed Toward Somalia Somali pirates seized the oil tanker MT Eureka in the Gulf of Aden near the Yemeni port of Qana at 05:00 local time on May 2, according to multiple Somali security officials who spoke with the BBC. The vessel, sailing under a Togolese flag, is now transiting between Yemen and Somalia and is expected to anchor in Somali waters within hours. Pirates departed from a remote coastal area near the town of Qandala in the semi-autonomous Puntland region. The Yemeni coastguard confirmed the hijacking. The seizure marks the fourth successful pirate hijacking in two weeks and the second in ten days, following the April 22 hijacking of the Honor 25, which was carrying 18,500 barrels of oil bound for Mogadishu. Somali piracy has surged since late 2023, when Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden diverted international naval resources away from anti-piracy operations. #Somalia πΈ Source @africaintel
