New Attack Signals Iran's Enduring Control Over Hormuz A Liberian-flagged bulk carrier was hit by an unknown projectile off the coast of Oman on August 3, leaving a crew member missing and the vessel disabled, marking the latest escalation in a series of attacks that have choked shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The Minoan Pioneer was targeted approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of the town of al-Khasab in Oman, prompting the vessel to broadcast a distress message on VHF Channel 16, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). Maritime security firm Vanguard Tech reported that the distress call was received by the Panama-flagged tanker Suriname Prosperity. According to Vanguard Tech, the projectile struck the Minoan Pioneer's engine room, causing a complete blackout and triggering a fire in the accommodation area.
